Fees/charges apply to applications for residence and renewals, with all documents proving compliance having to be prepared in advance. The Golden Visa is initially granted for a period of one year, renewable for two-year periods if the conditions for granting it persist, particularly with regard to investment.

After the first five years, a permanent residence permit may be granted or the investor may continue to apply for renewal of the Golden Visa. It is no longer necessary to meet the condition of maintaining the investment after obtaining a permanent residence permit.

It should be noted that a foreign national who has been legally resident in Portugal for six years may apply for Portuguese nationality.
